About Catterfly
Catterfly Creations is a home-based mosaic studio operating out of St. Petersburg Florida.
Owner and artist Grace O'Neil's first mosaic pictured a cat-bug creature floating above a flower garden. Now, the "catterfly" creature acts as a symbol of levity, playfulness, and everyday magic - the qualities that inspire every single mosaic.
The mosaic process
- A design is selected and drawn to scale.
- If needed, specific colors of stained glass are sourced.
- The stained glass is hand cut into small pieces (~1-3 inches long) and shaped using wheeled nippers.
- The pieces are placed and adhered onto a thin mesh, following the outline of the design underneath.
- Once all pieces are placed, the substrate (usually go board) is prepped with paint and hanging hardware (if appropriate) and covered in thin set mortar.
- The mosaic is placed on top of the mortar and left to dry for 24 hours.
- Once dry, the mosaic is grouted, lightly cleaned then left to dry for another 24 hours.
- When fully set, grout lines are tidied and the mosaic is polished until the final piece sparkles!
